Yesterday ~ Today in My Town Denver, NC Carolina Blue & White

Yesterday ~ Today in My Town
Denver, NC
Carolina Blue & White

Yesterday in Denver was a day of rain until about 5:15 PM and then….well you can see what I woke up seeing!

My Front Yard

I must say it was really beautiful. So far we lost a huge limb off a Bradford Pear tree and several limbs off my huge Magnolia tree which I really hate. Hope my Leland Cyprus will get through this okay, as they serve as a buffer down the sides of our backyard.

My Magnolia Tree

It warmed up this afternoon to around 34 degrees and tonight it’s suppose to go down to around 19 degrees. Yes, the children in Lincoln County had no school today and school for tomorrow has already been called off.

Enjoy a piece of Denver!

Checkered Dreams (Sherrills Ford, NC ~ LKN)

Checkered Dreams

Checkered Dreams Children’s Charity was founded in 2003 by Sue Ziegler. This non-profit organization was established to connect kids, six to eighteen, with the victory lap they deserve. During this time Sue lived in Pennsylvania but since 2006 her family and she have resided in the Sherrills Ford area.

Coming from a family big in racing and feeling a need to give back Sue heard of a similar organization in Ohio and decided to take the idea and spin it off to make it their own. The idea is to give sick or handicapped kids (including the entire family) a fun-filled night at a local racetrack and a break from being sick and having to deal with the day-to-day of the illness.

Kids not only get to watch a race but in most cases they become a part of the race event. Autographs from drivers and getting their pictures taken in the pit area are all a part of this event. Sometimes kids get to be a part of announcing and are able to say those famous words, “Gentlemen, start your engines!” The child and family get admitted to the racetrack free and get the total VIP treatment!

Sue takes whatever donations she can get. Drivers often donate their used helmets. Sue cleans and repaints them and has drivers autograph them. What a nice memento for the child to take home in remembrance of the event.

So if you know a child or have a child who is handicapped or has a serious illness and loves racing, please contact Sue for a Checkered Dreams night at the racetrack.

See you around Denver!

Enjoy a Day at The U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte

Enjoy a Day at
The U.S. National Whitewater Center
in Charlotte

With spring just around the corner why not plan an outing to the U.S. National Whitewater Center here in Charlotte. Yes, we have our own Whitewater Center in our own backyard since August 2006! Take it from someone that has experienced it, a day at the U.S. National Whitewater Center (USNWC) is truly an adventure. Located on the banks of the Catawba River in Charlotte, the USNWC is the world's largest artificial Whitewater River and an official U.S. Olympic Training Site. The center is locally owned and operated non-profit and is dedicated to promoting healthy, active, outdoor lifestyles.

At a cost of $38 million, the center encompasses 307 acres and offers whitewater rafting and kayaking, flat water paddling, mountain biking and hiking trails, a climbing center and a ropes course, along with a 2,400 square-foot conference center (catering is available) and 300-seat River's Edge Bar & Grill - all overlooking the home rapids of the U.S. National Slalom Canoe/Kayak Team. The center also has an outfitter's store full of everything you would ever need to enjoy the center.

The newest addition to the center is a zip-line that will take you from one side of the center to the other side.

The River's Edge Bar & Grill offers a variety of appetizers, soups & salads, sandwiches, desserts, drinks (including a large list of wine and beer). I recently enjoyed their pimento cheese burger which was really "huge" and "good". Our waitress told me that they even make their own pimento cheese.... The average cost of lunch including drink is around $10.00 per person.

If you haven't experienced the USNWC please take some time out and experience it. It's a great place to spend time with family and friends, a lot to see and do!!

You Just Never Know . . . . She Makes KILLER Pimento Cheese!

You just never know….. she makes killer pimento cheese!

Yesterday I had phone duty in the morning. About 11:00 some agents came in and said they were going to a Realtor luncheon and asked if I would like to tag along. At first I said no because I had already seen the house our firm had the listing for a year prior….but then I decided to go.

So I knew the house but I didn’t know who the new listing agent was until we pulled up. The listing

agent’s name was Suzanne Zickyes Suzanne is an Active Rain member and her office is right down the street from ours but I have never met her….until yesterday!! Going into the house while we were in the hallway our Broker-in-Charge (Gail Huss; she is an Active Rain member too and the most awesome BIC) was introducing us to another Realtor and when Suzanne heard my name she came around the corner and said you’re the one on Active Rain that is #1 in our area.

We really skipped the tour because we already knew the house and went straight for the food and conversation. The food was great; especially the killer “homemade” pimento cheese

that Suzanne had made and she promised to get me the recipe….I’m waiting Suzanne! Hopefully, she will be willing to share it with every one here in the Rain too.

So the food was great and the conversation was great too. I do have to say I am pretty proud of the firm I am with because some of the conversation stemmed from sharing ideas and information about the house in hopes of helping Suzanne get the house sold. The prior listing agent (Mike Bost; an awesome caring professional) from our office even offered Suzanne the pictures he had took prior to the seller moving all the furniture out…which looked like a model. Not all realtors work together like this for the real benefit of their clients and former clients.

Needless-to-say the Realtor luncheon turned out to be much more than I expected. I got to meet the real Suzanne Zick (in person) and spent a good thirty minutes in her presences talking shop and just whatever. I got a Suzanne “hug”. I got to listen to two Realtors (from different firms) talking about a clients best interest and both hoping for the house to sell soon…just how much professional is that? I got to have some killer homemade pimento cheese all of this on a rainy/windy day in Denver, NC…you just never know!

P.S.: Suzanne please put me on your invite list for the next one!
