Where's the GAS?

Where’s the GAS?

I have to honestly say I have never seen anything like it before… we are literally running out of GAS! Passing gas station after gas station and the pumps are dry. The easiest way to tell if a gas station has gas is by the lines of cars waiting to get to the pump. So essentially we have gone from shopping around for the best price to just paying any price to have it.

This situation started a few days after Hurricane Ike hit the United States. We have been told that a fuel pipeline that supplies much of the southeast was shut down during the storm and the gas is flowing back to Charlotte at the rate of four miles an hour.

Industry experts are predicting that the problem should be resolved in about a week. I can honestly say that experiencing this brings new meaning to shopping on line for housing!

Is anyone else having this same issue??

What is Hangar Skate Park? It's in Denver, NC

What’s Hangar Skate Park?

Denver, North Carolina has something new / something different / something good and that something is Hangar Skate Park! What’s that? Well it is the brain-child of 36 year-old student pastor Chris Sigmon (aka Siggy) of the 7X Youth Group at Denver Baptist Church here in Denver. It’s a Skate Park that reaches out to the young people to help clear up misconceptions about the kids who ride boards. It was created to offer a positive place where kids can skate and belong.

Tell me more . . . the park opened on June 21, at the former R-Anell Homes property (that Denver Baptist Church purchased about a year ago) the concept is jumping ramps on skateboards or BMX bikes then breaking for Bible study. Currently the skate park is outside and the ramps and benches are covered by a roof. The 10,000 to 15,000 square foot indoor park is expected to be complete by winter.

How Cool is That?!?!?!

Watch the YouTube clip!

If you want your children to come out and experience Hangar Skate Park here’s some more important details.

Tuesday’s 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Saturday’s 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Cost - $3.00

Helmets are required and available for rental.
Kids 11 and under are required to wear full pads.
Average age is 14, but participants have ranged from 8 to 18 years old

Parents are required to sign a liability waiver.

Benefit BBQ for Charlene Travis ~ Denver, NC

Benefit BBQ for Charlene Travis

Transplants from New Orleans 20 years ago, Herman and Charlene Travis decided to make Denver, North Carolina their home. Both generous beyond imagination are now finding themselves in need of help. Everyone here knows Herman, he’s always friendly; my husband has worked with him a few times in the past and he always takes time to say “Hello, how ya doing”.

Charlene is suffering from a disease called Sarcoidosis. The late football player Reggie White and comedian Bernie Mac suffered from the same disease. It is an inflammatory disease that affects the organs. It can cause the immune system to “overreact” damaging the body’s own tissues. This disease first showed up in Charlene’s lungs in October 1998. From there it has gone to her liver, but in the process she has difficulty swallowing and breathing, due to fluid building up in her diseased lungs because her liver is not functioning properly.

She has just been put on a nationwide transplant list. There is one procedure that she could have, to buy some more time, but if it is not successful then it would speed up her need for a transplant drastically and essentially she would be moved up to the top of the transplant list. Whether she has this procedure, their main goal is to help Charlene have a decent quality of life.

The Travis’ have insurance to help offset the costs of Charlene’s medicine, which is great, but there is still a difference and there are other living costs that are not covered. In an effort to help them a Benefit BBQ will be held this Saturday.

If you are not able to attend but would like to help please pray for Charlene and her family.

Operation ‘Noah’s Ark’ Still Needs Help

On August 26th, 393 animals ~ making up 17 different species, were rescued from a house here in Denver. This rescue took over ten hours, during which we were getting heavy bands of rain from the former hurricane Faye. I passed this place twice that day, while this rescue was taking place... what a bitter sweet sight. Just how does someone collect that many animals? How can anyone afford to feed that many?

You can only image the HUGE task of caring for all these animals; bathing, assessing, medicating, cleaning, walking, and feeding it all takes time, volunteers, and donations.

Our local Denver Baptist Church has recently purchased a 6 +/- acre track of land that included various buildings (the former R-Anell Company’s general office and manufacturing plant, which has moved to another part of the county) and it is here where the animals are being sheltered. As of last Tuesday it was reported that only a few have passed away, a few had to be taken to a vet hospital, and none have had to be “put to sleep” but this would be an option if it was deemed they were suffering.

Compact Animal Mobile Equipment Trailers (CAMETs) are being used at the Church shelter. CAMETs are stocked with all the necessities to set up an animal shelter; this is the first time for these to be used in North Carolina. All animals have been checked out by Dr. Kelly Farris, of the North Carolina State School of Veterinary School. Area vets are on the scene and are following the directions of Dr. Farris. Also, help teams have flown in from as far away as Colorado and Washington State to help in the efforts.

Since this is an ongoing criminal investigation it was first thought that authorities could not offer adoptions of these animals, due to legal issues. Now it sounds like they may have found a loop hole and will be able to start finding new homes for them soon.

Want to Help?

Volunteers
Volunteers are needed who have training in animal care. But walk-ins are accepted too. Morning and evening shirts are available. Sign up is at the temporary shelter which is the former R-Anell location at 3549 North Highway 16, Denver, NC; which is across the street from Denver Baptist Church and next to Rock Springs Elementary School (almost in downtown Denver). They have a working calendar to schedule volunteers for feeding, cleaning cages, and washing animals. They will also introduce the animals to leads so that they will be able to be taken out to exercise.

Needs
Clean towels and newspapers are needed. These can be dropped off at Denver Fire Department at 3956 North Highway 16, Denver, North Carolina. So far food has been donated by several PetSmart stores in our area. Due to the humid weather, with volunteers in and out of heat, they are asking for Gatorade and water as well.

Contributions
Monetary donations are desperately needed. Anyone can make a donation at any First Federal Savings Bank in Lincoln County; North Carolina.

My hat goes off to all the volunteers and contributors.

Please join me as I plan to go by this week and see what I can do to help and you can help too!
